Mega executive compensation deals were fairly rare until 2017 when eight S&P 500 CEOs reached the milestone of more than $50 million in annual pay. These large CEO pay packages peaked at 14 in 2021.

Among our findings regarding S&P 500 CEO pay from 2013-2023 are that:

  • 79 S&P 500 CEOs received pay packages of more than $50M over the past ten years.
  • At $2.3 billion, the biggest pay package in the last decade was awarded to Tesla CEO Elon Musk in 2018.
  • The next highest compensation plan, at nearly $300M, went to Expedia CEO Peter Kern in 2021.
  • More than half of mega CEO pay packages had equity as 90% to 100% of total pay.
  • 17 companies had multiple years of $50 million plus CEO pay packages from 2013-2023.
